Did Someone Say Luncheon?

You don’t have to tell me twice to get in the car for a lunch that includes wine! who’s with me? Anyone have anything to celebrate?!?! Because IM THERE.

I LOVE lunching. Not luncheons, thats what your mom goes to with her favorite gal pals to gossip which probably ends with you in trouble. Not lunch, thats what you shovel in your face while sitting at your desk at work. Now lunching, that includes wine, good company and laughter. 👌

Something about lunching (and drinking wine) makes me very relaxed and present in the moment…. Like nothing else about the past or future matters. In that moment, my only concern is the happiness of those around me, yummy food and not letting the wine bottle go upside down in the bucket. 😩

Musts for lunching at Spruce:

  1. 👚 Your favorite pastel colored outfit. You’ll fit right in
  2. 💫 Request a round table. Because duh, they are so much better
  3. 👅 Order every warm pastry on the menu. Seriously ev-er-y-one. Were talking hot beignets, melting butter on coffee cake omg I’m drooling on my keyboard and thats not even all!
  4. 🍷 Definitely a second bottle of overpriced wine
  5. 🙏 Walk around neighboring Pac Heights afterwards fawning over mansions. Pick the one you’re going to live in when you’re older, cause its totally gunna happen

Oh and for what I’m wearing? You get the idea. But I do have to say I adore this 1950s vintage coat I picked up in the Haight; it’s spot on for a spring tone not to mention practical for this city’s “spring” — 💨 😁 hence all my layers incase that dreadful wind picks up. And for the love of god, add a pair of fun shoes so you don’t blend in too much with the stiff housewives having a luncheon. 💁😜😜

So if you’ve been going a mile a minute recently, treat yo’self!! Get some friends or family together, have a nice weekend lunch (preferably outside) but definitely with wine. 😀

Going Out Lesson 1

Oooops I went to Public Works again last Friday, this time for a badass chick – Maya Jane Coles.

A quick recap on the evening’s events leading up to this club experience because its just TOO good to leave out:

7:00 PM- Cute carne asada dinner at home with 2 of my best friends mending our deep separation anxiety (it had been 17 days, unacceptable… can you say co-dependent much?!💞)

8:35 PM- Robe comes out, I’m actually surprised I didn’t put it on immediately upon home arrival like usual

8:55 PM- Girlfriend walks in hammered with her potential new roommate (that she met tonight😁😁)

8:56 PM- Potential new roommate says I look like Obi-wan Kenobi in my robe – I would have to agree lol

9:03 PM- Girlfriend refuses to eat leftover dinner (huge mistake😧) and proceeds to do MAJOR convincing on getting the bffs to come to club (and they do NOT go out to public works, well……..like ever)

10:20 PM- Mission accomplished: friends agree to come! 👏🎉🎉

10:30 PM-🍸 I send girlfriend down to corner store for Baileys so we can makeshift some espresso martinis🍸 in attempt to get closer to her level

10:45 PM- Drunk gf makes terrible espresso martinis – more like White Russians sub Kahlua for Baileys and this for cream, so actually not really like a White Russian haha but I digress… we all still drink the cup of creamy mixture (desperation😩)

11:00 PM- I’m forced to ditch the robe (sigggghhhh) and clothes goes on. I like to let the type of music steer my outfit selection. So tonight? Badass/down chick is the flavor of choice.

11:45 PM- Gf gets in fight with potential new roommate (UHH ooohh)

12:10 AM- WHAT IS GOING ON, WE NEED TO GO ALREADY ahhh

12:25 AM- Get to public works and I rush inside (gf goes to gas station for who knows what)

12:43 AM- I send a text to her “omgggggg MJC” (in utter awe of her existence and sound) ✨✨🎶

12:44 AM- Response is, “They won’t welt me in”

12:45 AM- Girlfriend too wasted, denied at front door. (LOL slash actually soo sad)

We proceed to dance and she was sorely missed. and after minutes upon hours of convincing the boys to go out….#epicfail #whitegirlwasted

Moral of the story people? Eat food before you drink, for the love of god! Oh and if you like deep house with a soulful girly edge see Maya Jane Coles next time she’s in town, she’s one of my favorites ever. Here’s a peek:

The Airmail Recipe

Pantones of the Postairmail pantone colors

I discovered this cocktail at the fabulously delicious restaurant in the Mission, Beretta (where my girlfriend is also a slave.…jk…ha eek don’t kill me). I kid you not, they have some of the best bartenders and cocktails in this entire city and I am lucky enough to know the recipe to one of them, and not many people do!…Well at least I believe I do.. 😉

Airmails are the perfect cocktail choice for when you wanna seem hella fancy but are not a professional bartender and kinda scared of messing things up for your guests (which is basically me all the time so you can probably expect a few more recipes up this ally 😝) Literally, super easy with minimum effort and maximum effect. Literally literally though, that mint leaf and bitters drop get ‘em every time.🍸 😉🍸

Ingredients:
Rum (Beretta uses Appleton Reserve but you can use any darker reserve rum as pictured above), Prosecco, Angostura bitters, honey, lime, mint

1.5oz of rum
1oz of 50/50 mix of honey and water
.75oz lime juice

Process:
1. Pour rum, lime juice and honey mixture into cocktail shaker and shake… and I mean SHAKE till your biceps hurt (is that a thing? no? doesn’t happen to anyone else? Damn, I need to hit the weight room😯)
2. Double strain it into a coupe glass (don’t want those tiny ice particles in there, do we!)
3. Top with a float of Prosecco
4. Garnish with a mint leaf and 4 dashes of bitters — tip: smack the mint leaf between the palm of your hands before placing on top to release the mint aroma/oils

So NOW who feels like a cocktail?? I do and its 8:15 AM! haha, must be Friday… So get your hands dirty and shake to impress!

Mornings at the Beach

Pantones of the Post

You know when you wake up and just have this overwhelming urge to go to the beach? yes? no? well it happens to me occasionally and luckily living on the California coast that desire is easily attainable! Gotta loveee California…

However going to the beach is a funny thing…it’s like a lazy and relaxing outing but at the same time quite a production (with the sand/weather + logistics). Not to mention, an ambitious move on a Sunday morning when its 12 times easier to just lay in bed with some cheerios catching up on SVUs. Feel me? We’re not exactly walking out the back door onto an 85 degree beach with palm trees and a beating sun to soak in.

With the beaches in SF you never really know what you’re going to get weather wise. Hold up, actually you KNOW it’s going to be chilly to say the leasssst. Even on a sunny, perfect, beautiful day there is almost always dun dun dun…WIND. Lets do the math: wind💨+ clouds⛅️ = SF beach🏄 = def chilly😧 => you betta bring a coat bitch!! 😜 😜

Early mornings…beach outing…possible sun but who knows…. that calls for comfy clothes. Soft and loose fitting plus walkable shoes — all of which made it into the look for today. The oversized turtleneck sweater I especially love (and repeat constantlyyy) because it goes with just about anything. Dressing down a fancy look or elevating a casual look, being in this sweater makes me ready for any place the day throws at me.

So, boyfriend jeans and a big sweater…Oh helloooooo Kendall! The baggier the bigger the softer the better, right? giiiiiveeeeeee it to me. I love cozy clothing!

It’s Disco Time

feature-compress

Pantones of the Postcolors

What can I even say about the reigning disco king, DJ Harvey?! Literally I remember watching him up there on Friday and thinking, “he’s just soooooooo coooooooooooollllllll.” Good vibes and party-time is the name of his game. My friends and I have been following him for years. Whether its standing front row with a big DJ Harvey cut-out head bobbing up and down or dancing on his DJ table (yes thats me), wherever Harvey is, I am. And when I heard he was coming back to Public Works, well… you couldn’t get me to purchase tickets faster.

The “anything goes” vibe of Public Works (and Harvey) permit some of the best “pre-party outfit prep” times of my life. I mean we all know getting ready for the party is half the fun of going right? Or is more then half? Or is it the entire fun of it?!?! Lol. Nah probs half for me cause let’s be real, goin to the party is HELLA fun too. That night, I was feeling especially flamboyant and androgynous and fierce but also feminine…

Ok hold up, why is my “chillen outttt” playlist on right now!? This is not the vibe. Cut and switch to the “IMMACULATE” playlist… ahhh much better. We’ll talk about immaculate another time… to continue…

I really felt like wearing something fierce and flamboyant. Apparently when Harvey surfaces so does the inner gay man in me haha…Alert alert: bustin’ out the loud shirt and sparkle shoes hayyyy! Lol BUT you can DEFINITELY get away with it at Harvey, so why wouldn’t one take advantage??? I mean, the whole disco state of mind is an expression of freedom…through dance and dressing up (duh). This is exactly why my pink sequin converse came out of the attic after all these years.

Ironically after spending all this time trying to slick back my hair to feel more sassy and boyish, as soon as that funky beat dropped around 1:25am I was all “fuck the hair” and began shaking my head ferociously until the bangs had become a limp noodle dangling forward on my forehead (not a good look thats for sure haha). Moral of the story? Come dressed to party but screw the hair, its time to DANCE.

Tis the season to be floral, fa la la la la, la la – la la. (I don’t care that its still 231 days away from Christmas, the jingle works ohKAY!)

Flowers, flowers FLOWERS everyone is just OBSESSED with flowers this time of year aren’t they?! And who most of all? My glorious mother. She jumps at the chance to take a photo of a newly blossomed beauty, put fresh flowers in vases around the house, or drive to central California just to watch the flowers bloom on this particular street. When she heard I was coming home for my brothers birthday last weekend the FIRST thing she told me was how the flowers were at their peak of bloom in the backyard and I must make a point to look. Clearly I did👆👀.

I’m all about dressing for the occasion. Items and events going hand in hand, if you will. Like Sperrys at a yacht club or sequins at a disco. So every time the flowers come out, so does this skirt.

I have had this skirt for at least 5 years and that’s what I love about it, it has stayed in style… You can’t really go wrong with a long lacy skirt for spring! But this year when the skirt came out of the closet (cough cough – a familiar feeling😜) I thought I’d give the ‘fit a touch more relevance by pairing with this leather jacket to dust on that 70s vibe (which, to be honest, I totally stole from my moms closet before the shoot). Long lace skirts already exude hippy vibes but give it a cropped leather or suede jacket and big round sunglasses and poof!… suddenly you’re on the 70s trend train.

Oh – and you gottaaaa have something in there to make it stand out… right? RIGHT. This chunky metal plated belt brings this outfit out of the ordinary. I mean, how else are you supposed to distinguish yourself from every other girl in a maxi skirt? (and that distinction is a must!). YES…Stand out.

So even though this stereotypical spring environment makes me chuckle inside… It is pretty satisfying and happy to be in a field of flowers not gunna lie… you try it! 👣🌼✌️🌼😉

Simple is Better When it Comes to Margaritas

Cinco De Mayo and drinking pretty much go hand and hand. In fact, I barely can say the words “Cinco de Mayo” in my head without “Cinco de Drinko” scrolling through right behind it — an everlasting “gift” from my college days I suppose. And what better way to kick off the cocktail post series than during this gloriously festive (and booze filled) holiday?!

The cocktail of choice??? THE MARGARITA, no question about it.

BUT.. while the hot pink “Strawberry Coconut Margaritas” and the over-indulgent frozen “Mango Margs” flood Pinterest grids causing much oooing and ahhing, thats not really my style. Lets be honest, those are wayyy more dessert than cocktail and we are all after the bigger buzz/less hungover combo aren’t we? For many reasons, I am a diehard fan of the traditional agave margarita (with jalapeño if your feeling frisky – which I tend to be).

To whom do I owe this ultra-light concoction? Julio Bermejo invented this recipe about 20 years ago at Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant right here in San Francisco!! How cool is that?! 😀

Soooo you ask, how do you make such refreshing and perfectly spicy margaritas?!?

Ingredients:

2 oz 100% agave tequila (I used Espolón cause you get the most bang for your $, but see link👆 for more options)
1 oz fresh lime juice (about 2 limes)
1/2 oz agave nectar
*optional: kosher salt, jalapeño, lime wedge (for garnish)

Process:

*If you want spicy margs –> first muddle 1-3 thin slices of jalepeño, with a splash of tequila, in the bottom of your shaker (or cup). Every jalepeño differs in spice level, it might take you the first batch to realize what level you’re at, so be aware! Seeds always make it extra spicy so generally speaking, less seeds = less spice. 😛

1. Mix agave nectar with 1/2 oz water (SUPER important, otherwise you’ll end up with this considering the amount of agave you’ll need to use to balance out the lime juice) and pour into a shaker.
2. Pour thinned nectar, tequila, and lime juice into the shaker. Add ice and shake until condensation occurs.
2.5 To salt the rim of your glass (optional, but do so before pouring the drink in) drag a cut lime around the rim and then gently dip the rim on a plate with a thin layer of salt cover.
3. Strain into a glass over ice and garnish with a lime wedge or jalepeño slice.

Remember…All-natural ingredients + less sugary mix = healthier drinking. Win! 👍👍

CHEERS,  HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO EVERYONE!!!
