Stay Here: Tilden Hotel

tildenhotel1

The hotel scene in SF is changing and I want to shout from the rooftops: FINALLY!

For so long San Francisco had a hotel void. It was either the dirty motels in the TL or the expensive corporate style hotels in downtown (which weren’t cute enough for the price, let’s be honest haha). But over the last year or two, a series of trendy hotels, ranging from high-end to middle ground, have emerged and I’m here for it. 🙌🏼

I recently had the chance to stay at the Tilden Hotel, a boutique hotel near downtown. It’s not ultra fancy or anything (3 stars) but it was perfect for a weekend of fun in SF. It’s weird not being a resident in my own city anymore! So the Tilden had some big shoes to fill, and I was satisfied. 😉

The rooms were great — big closet, comfy white bed, downtown views…pretty quintessential SF spot. But the stars of the show? Malin+Goetz product in the shower and an in-room coffee maker. Real talk, I measure my satisfaction at hotels based on their in-room coffee/tea service and their choice of bathroom product. So in that case, Tilden get’s 5 stars.

As far as the rest of the hotel? It’s not glamorous but it’s none too shabby either! 👍🏼 You’ll find an on-site bar/restaurant (The Douglas Room), a “gym” (consisting of a peloton and rowing machine), a cafe, valet and back patio with games to hang. With the killer food scene in SF, I would actually venture out to eat (Del Popolo is walkable and has the bessssst pizza 🍕😋). The Douglas Room is doable if you’re starved and in a pinch, but I would go for cocktails. I was superrrr pleased with the Chamomile Martini and Smoke’n Rosemary. 🥃🍸

All in all, if you don’t want to shell out the money for something like The Proper, this is absolutely a solid and affordable choice. I would def stay at the Tilden Hotel again for a SF weekender! Especially because it was so convenient being smack in the middle of the city, no complaints here! 👌🏼

Porto City Guide

porto city guide, chasing kendall

Starting off with some brute honesty here… I liked Porto better than Lisbon (that being said, have you checked out my killer Lisbon City Guide)? Porto has the same charm and laidback lifestyle that SF does, even the windy hills! I felt comfortable and at home here. The tiled facades and sunsets over the Douro River became my daily eye candy and the endless port became my actual candy haha. But beware, those port tastings will knock you on your ass real quick!

As always, make sure not to miss the personalized map at the end of this post! Has everything I went to or wanted to go to :)

Where to Stay

Yet another perfect place to Airbnb. We stayed here, which was part of a complex of Airbnb’s called the “Douro Apartments” — highlyyyy recommend these guys, their properties are in an amazing, central location and have sweeping views of the Douro River/port houses across it (pictured above is the view from our balcony). We found a couple other cute hotels (Hotel Torel Avantgarde and Pestena Vintage Porto) but given that our main concern was a river view we found that Airbnb was much more sufficient for the cost.

Where to Eat

Zenith
Given that this was nearly 2 months into our eurotrip we were SO stoked to locate a proper brunch. This place was unreal we had to go back a couple times to try more menu items.

BOA BAO
Helloooo Asian food, I missed you! This place is the bomb, we found out it exists in Lisbon too and went back for takeout haha. Rare to find a Thai restaurant with good cocktails and buns but this place made it happen! 🥢🥟

Mito
Great Mediterranean inspired spot, with fresh ingredients, a nice change of pace from everything else. Get the steak for 2 and some red wine 👌🏼

Mercado Municipal Da Beira-Rio
Stumbled upon this market in search of port tastings but thank god for bringing it to us! ‘Twas a little break on the bank without sacrificing the food culture of Porto. (Went back for it again too  😆). Also, 100% get the beer tasting. 5 euro for like 6 local Portuguese beers?! That’s cray town. 🍺 I truly think this place is a Porto secret!

Cafe Santiago
A must-stop for the famous Francesinha sandwiches, a tradition in Porto but dear god get one to split haha. Think — bread, sausage, ham, bread, draped in cheese, topped with an egg, french fries around the side and alllllll set in a plate full of gravy. 😲

Port Houses
I mean, of course haha. But lemme break it down…Taylors was my favorite because they have a super cute garden to sip in afterwards and very informative (awesome not boring) audio tour to learn about port. Graham’s is a little further away but has a patio with a nice river view and one of the few I found to have bites. 😋 Ferreira, a favorite among locals, was recommended by out Airbnb host, but unfortunately we didn’t make it there.

One of my biggest pieces of advice is: walk along the river on the Gaia side and find an outside table to sit and taste port. These mini cafe/bars (ex: Cafe Soraya) are awesome because you can sit and taste lots of different port houses at the same time without moving! 💃

Other than that……

Candelabro
This place has true charm, super casual spot you can hang outside with your friends all night, plenty of locals doing the same.

Royal Cocktail Club
Only pure cocktail bar in Porto. Upscale vibe, inventive and traditional cocktails but most importantly, great glassware 😉

Vogue Cafe Porto
What we thought was a gimmicky European joke, was actually a super legit, upscale bar/restaurant haha. Turns out there’s only 7 in the world and it’s actually run by Vogue headquarters. Good place for a nightcap Negroni 🥃

What to Do

Yes, Port tasting is the obvious suggestion but here are some Do’s and Don’ts:

  • Do a tour, it’s important to understand the history of port and how it’s made because it really made me love it that much more (but only one haha because the tours get repetitive).
  • Don’t do more than 2 tastings in 1 day. It’s is not like wine tasting, the buzz hits you hard and fast lol.
  • Do taste outside of the port houses. some bars and markets offer tastings and if you take advantage of these you can taste from several different houses at once

Jardim Do Morro
Most definitely catch a sunset at the Jardim Do Morro, it’s across the river on the Gaia side so you get an AMAZING view looking back on Porto with the sunsetting behind it. Picture a cute guitarist serenading locals + tourists alike, birds dancing through the sky, and a drink stand serving all the alcoholic beverages you’d want for this moment. Everyone applauded and cheered when the sun went down…truly magical.

Livraria Lello
I never made it here, but don’t feel bad about it either. I know it’s a tourist staple but my mom went and confirmed it’s not worth the wait. You can barely enjoy the bookstore (or photograph it) because of the crowds. If you have several days in Porto, then go for it, but 72 hours? Skip it.

Shopbop’s BIG Sale

shopbop sale - chasingkendall favorites

I tend to approach Shopbop’s sales with a similar strategy: find a few key pieces for the next season and splurge! Since items on their site tend to start at a higher price point, it’s a great chance for me to get some new designer pieces for less. (As opposed to stocking up on as much as possible which is how I shop Zara/Urban/Mango sales) Shopbop sales are about quality, not quantity…IMO.

I mean, if all you do is buy these Alexander Wang boots for $520 then congratulations, you’ve won! 😛

This sale is particularly one of my favorite because there are less rules! The discounts apply to both sale and full-priced items so the grab bag of goods is STACKED.

20% off orders under $500 // 25% off orders over $500+ // Sale lasts 3 days (9/27 at 11:59pm PST).

Now I can justify spending more than I probably should on a killer piece for fall, because it’s on sale haha. Who says that’s a bad thing though?  I rounded up my favorite pieces based on their unique style for value. Shop them below! 😁🛍

Lisbon City Guide

lisbon-feature2

I got a bit distracted from the city guide publishing with my move to LA, sorry about that, 😬but we’re back in business with Lisbon and going to be rolling out Porto and the Algarve in the upcoming week. Lisbon was the last stop on our 2 month European adventure, and kind of ironic considering how much the city reminded us of San Francisco, with the bridge, food and friendly culture.

Anyway, let’s dive right in on all my favorite spots to eat + drink! Plus a few not to miss landmarks and shops too. Don’t forget to check out the map at the end of the post where I bookmarked everything.

Where to Stay

Definitely stay in the old town when visiting Lisbon…Barrio Alto y Chiado (where we stayed) or Baixa. We choose an Airbnb because after scouring hotels, it was truly the best option for the cost, afterall having a balcony to sip port on and a great view was high on our priority list. 😉 Our Airbnb (above) was absolutely perfect — amazing and helpful host, gorgeous interiors and one of the only places we stayed around Europe with an elevator! haha.

On the flip side… since it was the end of our 2 month trip we wanted to treat ourselves with a hotel experience and booked the Pestena Palace (below), an old palace turned hotel with pool, spa and beautifully preserved interiors. It’s a bit outside the city center but they offer shuttle transfers throughout the day. The Pestena Palace is a quiet sanctuary that exceeded our expectations (plus Madonna and Jane Fonda have both stayed there sooooo…..) 💃

Where to Eat

Ramiro
This place was recommended over and over to us by friends, family and locals during our stay. Apparently it’s the best seafood you’ll ever have. Unfortunately the day we showed up to eat we found out it had closed for summer vacation a few days earlier so we shed a tear and moved on, PLEASE go for me.

ZeroZero
A happy accident after Ramiro closed on us, ZeroZero is a very well done Italian joint, (run by Italians, so you know it’s legit) that we ended up at twice during our stay. I’m still drooling over the pastas, pizzas and drinks. Highly recommend the Linguine alle Vongole, Di Graziano Pizza and the Giardino di Prosecco — YUM!!

A Cevicheria
An absolutely divine Peruvian restaurant, with fresh seafood and trendy atmosphere. Just send it and get all the ceviches haha you can’t go wrong; but if I had to narrow it down…the classic ceviche and bbq’d octopus are musts! Wash it down with a pisco sour. 👌🏼

Alma
I’ve never done any sort of tasting menu/Chef’s Table kind of thing…until now, and OMG was I not disappointed. Alma was truly a one of a kind experience and the best meal I’ve ever had (definitely recommend the wine pairings to accompany). #treatyourself

TimeOut Market
An awesome food court area where you can find some of the city’s most popular restaurants and chefs! A great way to sample the foodie scene of Lisbon.

Where to Drink

Park
They converted the top floors of a parking garage into a rooftop bar and it’s EPIC! Multiple areas to lounge, views of the 25 de Abril bridge, and even a DJ/dance floor. Grab a glass of wine and watch the sun set over Lisbon or a negroni and watch the city lights twinkle — ya can’t go wrong any time of day.

Foxtrot
Funky art nouveau decor, great cocktails, a pool table and back patio – what more could you want? Great for kicking back with a late night drink. 🍸

Rio Maravilha
Yet another rooftop bar (they’re v popular in Lisbon) but this one has the best view of the bridge, funky artsy vibes and the best cocktails we had in Lisbon. Even though this was our favorite bar, Rio Maravilha is located in the LX Factory so it’s important to save time to walk around the area.

Cerveteca Lisboa
If you’re into craft beer, go here (pictured above)! Super low maintenance place with friendly staff. Grab a flight of local beers and chill out mid-afternoon.

+ many more on map at end of post!

Cerâmicas na Linha

Where to Shop

POP Closet
An extremely well curated vintage store, with high and low end styles. Don’t bother going though, I think I cleaned them out.
😜

Showu
Well crafted small labels from around Europe. I was super pleased with how unique the styles were yet how good the prices at Showu (located in the LxFactory).

Ceramicas na Linha
One of those places you can pop in for 5 minutes, grab a ceramic bowl  and leave (
👈🏼 me) or accidentally get lost for an hour inside (👈🏼 also me, when I came back for the second time). Full of beautiful tiles and ceramic pieces. 2 minutes into Ceramics na Linha and  I’ve never wanted an extra suitcase more, to stock up on all their goods! So cheap too!

And then generally speaking, head to LxFactory for tons of artisan shops ranging from interior, to clothing, to travel, to kitschy goodness.

LX Factory Lisbon city guide

What to Do

LX Factory
An arts district full of tiny shops, bars and restaurants. You can easily spend the afternoon wandering around the LX Factory. Grab a drink at rooftop bar, Rio Maravilha, or some bomb Mexican food + mezcal cocktails at Mez Cais LX. Don’t miss shopping a new look at Showu or popping into the interior design stores for some eye candy.

Elevator da Bica
Picturesque trolly going up the hill, basically the image of what I had in mind when picturing Lisbon. Snap a photo earlier in the morning but stick around for dusk as locals gather on the stairs to chat and sip drinks.

Palacio Nacional Da Pena
The not-to-miss tourist moment of Lisbon is this gorgeous palace a top the town of Sintra. Photographs galore but honestly, if you’re in Lisbon during peak season I would think twice about going (or at least avoid Monday’s when all the museums are closed). It’s swarmed with tourists and basically ruined the experience, even though I had to check the box off.

  • Buy tickets ahead and skip all the lines
  • Take a tuk tuk up/down the mountain from the train station
  • No need to climb the stairs up, or do the tour inside

Paris Travel Guide

paris top2

Can you even believe that I had never been to Paris until this summer?! Like who am I?! Well it was a great way to spend my 29th birthday, that’s for sure. Paris was everything I thought it would be…beautiful, romantic and a wee bit snobby, in the best way possible of course haha. I still can’t wait to return next year for my birthday 😉 #manifestit

Read on for where to stay, eat, drink, shop and more! Also I bookmarked all the places I went (or wanted to go) on a map at the end of this post, hope it helps you plan your next Parisian adventure!

Where to Stay

les bain hotel paris

Le Marais is the best area to stay in, awash with classic cafes, hip bars and shops. We split our time between Les Bains and Hotel De Jobo, two boutique hotels in the area. They’re a bit pricey but it was my birthday week and a time in our trip where we wanted to splurge a little more (plus we split the cost with friends 😂). Most chic hotels in Paris you’re going to pay upwards of $200/night especially during the summer months. Airbnb is an amazing alternative and predominately what we used throughout Europe….anyway, most importantly, stay in Le Marais!

Where to Eat

LouLou Restaurant
This is where I went for my birthday dinner and it blew me away, although expensive. Take an earlier seating so you can enjoy the view of the Tuileries Garden and watch the sunset. Don’t forget to order the truffle pizza!

Bistrot Paul Bert
The best steak frites you’ll ever have (tip: get the black peppercorn sauce). No joke, Katie and I went back for a second time at the end of the week it was that good. 🥩🍟

Girafe Restaurant
Instagrammed by Vogue Paris amongst every other , this highly photogenic restaurant has patio views of the Eiffel Tower, fresh seafood and Italian bites — perfect for a long drawn out rosé lunch. However it’s extremely hard to make a reservation, the best tip I can offer is having your hotel concierge call on your behalf, (it’s a french thing). 😋

Cafe De Flore & Les Deux Magots
Two quintessential and historical Parisian cafes, where you can sit out on the sidewalk, sipping an espresso or a spritz and people watch, my absolute favorite pastime in Paris.

Breizh Cafe
With a few locations around Paris, Breizh Cafe is the place to go for both sweet and savory crepes. Get the ham & cheese with an egg and caramelized onions (it was the best in our group’s order) + a french cider to match!

Where to Drink

Danico
Randomly swung by Danico with a friend and it ended up being the best cocktails Katie and I had in Paris! 🎊Get their clarified milk punch and this hot cheesy ham bread appetizer roll – it was incredibly delicious.  Their cocktail menu changes frequently but the attached restaurant, Daroco, will always have killer pizzas and pastas.

No Entry
Speakeasy bar under the infamous Pink Mamma restaurant. Really decorative drinks with elaborate ingredients but half the fun is just trying to find out how to enter!

Ritz Hotel Bar
The most expensive drink you’ll have in Paris but at least it’s worth it (not like Hotel Costes lol). They are a work of art. 🍸

Andy Wahloo
funky cool vibe with a light up dance floor and weird wall art. And if the cocktails get you hungry, pop in the back restaurant, Derriere, for the gnocchi and pork chop.

Experimental Cocktail Club
Another hit from the Experimental Group (an infamous hospitality collective). This bar sets the standard for Parisian cocktails, perfect for a pre or post-dinner drink however be aware if you go too late it can get quite crowded and loud. I’m more into being able to sit and talk to my fiancé lol so I’d go earlier next time.

Boat Parties (summer only)
In the summer months, lots of river cruise boats convert into bars that are stationed along the river. I mean, who doesn’t love a boat party?! Check out Rosa Bonhuer Sur Seine, or Mademoiselle Mouche, a garden chic open-air bar which is located at the end of the Bateaux Mouches pier.

Where to Shop

Kiliwatch
The best vintage shop in Paris! Funky prints, trendy items and walls of Levi’s jeans (I got 2 custom tie-dye Levi’s 501s and wore them nonstop the rest of the trip).

Sandro Paris and Ba&sh Paris
Two french designers that are not to miss while in Paris. Of course we can shop them online here in the states, but everyone knows the inventory is better in France! 😉

L’Appartement Sezane
The mecca of Parisian style, and such an amazing store design. Not sure what I did more of in there, perusing the new styles or snapping pics of the interior haha.

Le Bon Marché
A high-end department store, basically the French version of Harrods. Definitely ride the escalators and marvel at the merchandise.

What to Do

Picnic in the Park
Legit all I wanted to do in Paris was to pop into the different shops for all the different picnic fixings and then lay in the sun for hours with my babe, just as the Parisians do…right? 😛 The best places to picnic are Champ de Mars (views of the Eiffel Tower) or Luxembourg Gardens, a more beautiful ambiance (sans tower view). For all the goods, start at the corner of Rue Montorgueil & Rue Tiquetonne and walk north upwards, you’ll find the charcuterie, patisserie, fromagerie etc. Just don’t forget to pop into a wine shop for a Gamay.

Louvre
A tourist must if you haven’t done it before (if you have, then hit up the Musee D’ Orsay instead). But I highly suggest picking your top 3 exhibits and just hitting those otherwise you’ll loose an entire day in there! We did Ancient Egypt, because mummies, duh. Ancient Greek and Roman statues because, beauty duh and the Decorative Arts, because gold and glitz duh. Oh and of course, had to peek an eye in on the tiny Mona Lisa. 😉

Eiffel Tower
Another tourist must if you haven’t before but here are some use tips to improve your Eiffel Tower experience:

  1. Don’t wear a dress/skirt because it’s very windy up there (made that mistake lol)
  2. Absolutely get tickets online beforehand, and climb the stairs — you’ll avoid all lines and stairs are not bad at all
  3. You don’t need to go to the tip top, the 2nd level is enough

Crazy Horse Cabaret
An absolute must if you’re down with a little nudity. The sexiest burlesque show I’ve ever been to, actually the only burlesque show I’ve ever been to haha but now I’m ruined they set the bar so high! It was so artistic and entertaining, I can see why Beyoncé was so inspired by these ladies. I was joking with Katie I want to fly back to Paris next year so I can spend my birthday at Crazy Horse again.  (PRO TIP: get the ticket that comes with a half bottle of champagne. totally worth it and seemed to be the MO there). 🥂😘

The Take Home Fertility Test

modern fertility test

The results are in! I’m fertile! 😜

If you’ve seen my latest blog or some recent social postings, you’ll know I’ve been working with Modern Fertility — a female founded company that believes every woman should have access to their hormone and fertility information earlier in life (or really just whenever you want it).

Typically if you want this info you have to get a bunch of doctor referrals, prove you’ve been trying to conceive and can’t, then pay around $1500. But for $150 you can find out your stats from the couch!

So how did the test go?? Continue Reading

Your Fertility Questions Answered

modernfertility-feature

How many eggs do I have? Should I be freezing my eggs right now? When is the right time to get pregnant? Am I too late? Do I have time? What if I have to do IVF, how long does that take?

As an (almost) 29 year old woman, these questions pop into my head quite frequently, (and if you’ve been wondering anything about your reproductive health than this post is for you too). With an extremely busy life and career, I’ve always wondered when I actually have to start making moves to get pregnant, and not just when I “should.” There’s so much talk in the media about freezing eggs which has me like 🤷🏼‍♀️😬🤯…So I jumped at the opportunity to open the conversation with  Modern Fertility.

Modern Fertility is a female founded company dedicated to making fertility information more accessible, earlier in life. They make the same fertility hormone test (that has traditionally been used in infertility clinics) available to women at any point in their reproductive journey…which I’m ecstatic about.

BUT I wanted to make sure to include my community of girlbosses too, so I took to IG stories and asked my following to submit questions they have around fertility. With the help of Modern Fertility, I’m super excited to share the answers with you all. Hoping that it helps you decide when it’s right, for you, to start thinking about pregnancy. 💘

1) What would that test tell me about the likelihood of getting pregnant in the next few years?

Your hormones are not a crystal ball but they can help you understand your reproductive career – and how to think about getting pregnant. They can indicate early menopause, health conditions like POI and PCOS, and get you data to think through egg freezing or IVF (fertility treatments are not right for everyone!). Keeping track of hormones over time helps you know where you are and get ahead of discussions with your doctor or partner, financial decisions, or treatment plans that could otherwise come out of nowhere.

2) How many eggs do most women have in their lifetime?

Women are born with all the eggs we’re ever going to have – 1-2 million! When we hit menopause, we have 0 eggs left. Speaking of: the clinical definition of menopause is 12 months without a period.

3) What is the average amount of eggs as a women between 29-31?

At puberty you have approximately 400,000 eggs and at menopause that number ticks down to zero! Every woman loses her eggs at different rates. The best proxy for the number of eggs you have “waiting in the wings”? Anti Mullerian Hormone, or AMH, which measures how many eggs you currently have.

4) How much does the take home test cost and how does it work?

Our test retails for $159. It’s the same fertility hormones test that has traditionally been done (reactively) in infertility clinics available to women before their first or next child. It’s a finger prick that you can do at home, in your jammies, and once you send it in you’ll receive results on your customized Modern Fertility dashboard within 10 days.

The test measures up to 8 key fertility hormones–mapping to ovarian reserve (how many eggs you have), ovulation, and other general body factors that have implications for fertility like thyroid health. These levels can help you or your partner identify any red flags and understand menopause onset as well as success in egg freezing/IVF.

When you order the test we’ll send you everything you need to check in on your fertility. You do a very simple finger prick using the lancet – takes just a minute – and then you leave about 4 big drops of blood onto the collection card. Once dried, you repackage and send it in. Results are uploaded onto your dashboard within 10 days.

With Modern Fertility you also get access to a one on one consult with a fertility nurse and an invite-only webinar (“Egginar”) to get more context on your results and get your questions answered.

5) Info on PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is a condition in which the ovaries develop follicles but don’t release an egg. PCOS affects one in ten women of childbearing age. The exact cause of PCOS isn’t always clear, but it’s due to hormonal imbalances in the body – particularly imbalances of androgens, or male hormones. These are present in all women, but women with PCOS may have higher levels of androgens. Androgens disrupt the menstrual cycle and impede the ovaries’ ability to mature follicles into eggs and ovulate, which is why you may see some of the following as classic PCOS symptoms:

  • Infrequent menstruation or anovulation (a fancy word for the total absence of a period)
  • Having signs of excess androgens (things like excess facial and/or body hair and acne)
  • Having laboratory values consistent with excess androgens (typically a combination of high AMH, high testosterone, and high luteinizing hormone)
  • Polycystic ovaries (polycystic translates to “many cysts” which can be confusing, because the “cysts” in PCOS doesn’t refer to ovarian cysts. Rather this refers to the high number of large follicles found in the ovaries of women with PCOS)

6) What’s the age range to start freezing your eggs?

If you are sure that you want to freeze your eggs, the earlier the better, since your egg quality declines with age. The main reason for this is that egg freezing is all about preserving your viable eggs, and the younger you are, the more eggs you have and those eggs are of higher quality. Unfortunately for us women, the quality of our eggs declines with age. However, egg freezing isn’t right for everyone, so make sure you do your research! Here’s a great place to start: https://modernfertility.com/blog/freeze/

7) How much is egg freezing?

Egg freezing can cost upwards of $10,00 per cycle, but this varies clinic by clinic and state by state. For a more detailed cost breakdown, check out this blog post.

8) How old is “too old” to have a baby? Typically…

This can vary person-to-person, but as you age your risks to things like gestational diabetes, preclampsia, miscarriage and downs syndrome. We have an amazing tool on our site called the Timeline Tool which helps you visualize your family planning and explore risk factors of having kids at various ages. Feel free to play around with this!

👉🏼 I hope this Q&A sheds light on some mystery areas we face as young women. I believe we should be able to have access to this information much more easily than spending thousands of dollars and getting 5 referrals to an infertility clinic. Which is why i was so excited to partner with Modern Fertility.

I’m going to be taking the at home fertility test very soon and sharing my experience on the blog. So if you enjoyed this post be sure to follow along for my results!
